Love 'n Steel

Imagine walking into the gym, down a busy row of store fronts, or just looking up from you empty matini glass - and there she is - your other half. She looks so amazing in this light; she's got long blonde hair, perfect lips, a certain glow all around her, what a pretty smile.. but wait...she's also got guns (arms!), legs (long 'n strong), and she walks with a certain confidence about her - she's 100% feminine, but she's not June Cleaver, she's more like Wonder Woman!

But this is prolly just a phase - this weightlifting thing - will pass. Many men and women who date weight-lifting enthusiasts just don't get it -- it's as much the men dating fit women, as it is average women dating fit guys. And if training isn't viewed as a fad, it may very well be viewed with contempt - and even jealousy. Some [non-training] significant others may feel intimidated to the point they'll make you choose - 'it's me or the gym!'

But enough of what I think. I wanted to know what the champions felt; I wanted to know what they've experienced - in the dating world.

"The gym and being healthy was NOT a big part of my life at all before I met my husband four years ago. He had a much healthier lifestyle when I met him than I did, so when I decided to make health and fitness a major part of my life a little over a year ago, it made it a lot easier because he was very supportive. He has consistently supported me in my fitness journey and rigorous diet/training routine that I have as a competitor. Although he doesn't compete, he closely follows my program (with modifications of course) which makes it sooo much easier for me to stay on track! I have been very lucky to have a spouse who pushes me to be the best version of myself. I do know some women whose significant others are not supportive of their fitness goals, which I know must make it difficult to keep going. If someone you are with is trying to hold you back from bettering yourself, I would seriously consider if it is a healthy relationship. I think women who are interested in competing should be up front about it with the person they are dating/considering dating because it can definitely cause tension if both people are not on the same page!"

"When you are single, like me, dating can be very difficult. Finding someone who shares the same passion as you do for working out and eating healthy, can be hard; but my advice would be to not give up what you love and enjoy doing for another person. It might take some time, but to be truly happy with someone, you need to do whatever makes you happy."

"Fitness has always been a part of my life so it's no surprise that I met my husband at the gym. I'm blessed to have such a supportive partner who will do anything for me. When he and I started dating I told him, there are two things with which i will not let him interfere. My God and my gym and he has been supportive since day one. My advice for single ladies is to be up front about your passion and love for fitness. It's better to find out early on if a man is going to have a problem with your training schedule or your eating habits. Never change for a man. Do what you love and look around while you're doing that...there will likely be plenty of men that share your passion and will support your goals."

"Fitness has been the biggest part of my life since I was 19. Therefore, it has always been understood how important my own fitness & nutrition are to me to everyone I surround myself with.

If one should date a fellow competitor, there is a great support system from day one to the day you walk on stage. You can lift and do cardio together, and you form a bond that is really special because what you're training for is really special to both of you. However, if one has a bad day and their day is affected, usually yours is too. You simply have to calm that person down and get them back on track. It can be stressful, but only you can decide if it's worth the stress or not. Let's face it--all competitors get cranky towards the end of the show prep, so beware during those last final days! You'll find there are pros and cons of dating another competitor who loves you and wants to see you succeed just as much as themselves, you just have to find a good one!

Then there are those you'll date who don't compete and do not know what it takes to get into that top shape to grace the stage. They truly admire the hard work you put in to look the way you do, and view it as an attractive quality. They see you as a strong, driven individual.

Fitness and nutrition are not just something to do, they are a way of life. My advice would be to integrate time spent together in the gym. Try to help your significant other who could use some tips on form or gaining/losing some pounds. You have to be attracted to who you're dating right? And of course you're concerned about bettering their health because you care about them!

At the end of the day, it shouldn't matter what fitness/nutrition level your significant other is on, it's about the love you share for each other. Try to remember the qualities which you adore about each other, breathe deeply when you're frustrated, communicate, and try to be understanding should silly issues arise. They will understand you're feeling a little deprived and moody as the show gets closer. Your significant other will be your biggest cheerleader,so welcome their support and address the fact how good it makes you feel that they truly care."

"My feedback on your post about dating - When I decided to make fitness and competing in NPC bikini competitions a full time lifestyle last year, I assumed dating wouldn’t be an option for me. I was single and living in Seattle at the time, so I had all the time in the world to devote to training, food prep, and myself. I poured my heart and soul into my new lifestyle and embraced it, but honestly felt if I tried to date AND be committed to my rigorous training, I would be thrown off balance and destroy all my fitness goals. I avoided dating like the plague out of sheer fear that I’d lose sight of my goals. Over time I started moving forward with my goals, but was admittedly lonely.

When I joined Team Bombshell I September of 2011, I had the opportunity to attend a fitness camp in Daytona Beach, FL and meet dozens of other women who compete – AND maintain healthy relationships. Could it be? You can compete AND be in a relationship? I spent a lot of time asking these amazing women all kinds of questions and the biggest trend I noticed was one thing – INVOLVE your partner. Make him feel important. Pay attention to him. Appreciate him! It’s hard when we’re so focused on ourselves and our training to remember someone else and their needs. With that in mind, I opened myself up to dating again and actually met a great guy who really supports my lifestyle.

I’ve found success in involving him in food prep (he’s great on the grill!), and working out together has also been a great way to keep myself feeling on target. He’ll attend his first NPC show in March with me – and while it’s nice to have someone around to tan my back, it’s even better to have love and support in the audience. While my lifestyle can be a little hard to take at times, I’ve found a lot of success in remembering SHOW my appreciation for him, do little things for HIM to make his life easier, and never stop being grateful all the love and support he gives me. It can work, you just have to be open with each other about your needs right out of the gate and communicate when you feel things heading south."

Marilena EchoHawk Speaks!

"The show was the FIRST ever IFBB PRO Women's Physique show! The Desert Muscle Classic held in Mesa Arizona; the Promoter was Stryker. I Placed 2nd place! My Tan was done by Liquid Sun Rays, Posing /diet was done by my trainer/coach Allen Watkins.

The contest prep was a little more intesnse this show, due to it being my first PRO show and also the new division WOmens Physique. We really were not sure if the judging was going to go on the harder/leaner/more muscular side, or a little softer. so I had to put all my trust (which I always do) in my trainer Allen Watkins. All the girls in the competition came ready to battle and all had great physiques, some were a little more ripped, softer but muscular, leaner but muscular, but OVERALL THEY ALL looked amazing.. The great thing about this show was every single female on that stage was cheering for one another, the camaraderie was like I've never seen before. Being on a pro stage and sharing it with that select group of women is definitely always going to be a good memory, and I made some good new friends out of it!

ALways a special thanks to my daughter, Brooklyn, for being one of my best supporters, and always my family, friends, and all my employees at work for understanding the crazy dieting lol..."

Hot Bodies & Sizzling Soundtracks!

Weight-training and intense cardio definitely render some pretty jaw-dropping results, coupled with smart eating and good supplementation. We know all that - more or less (lol). But who ever said that all this training was fun? I could see were lifting (esp. free weights) could get your heart racing, as your imagination was left to its own devices; however, unless you're John Basedow or some p9ox nutjob, I highly doubt you find the treadmill, stairclimber, or any of the other novelty torture devices to be entertaining on their own.

Some people will bring a magazine and play a balancing act, if you step too hard, your reading material will be on the floor. Others like to meditate - till they forget where they're at -- and SPLAT! Others like to watch tv - which unless you have earphones (most that don't), then not only will you be bored, but you'll be annoyed b/c you can't understand a damn thing. (lol).

Finally, an enlightened few take mp3 players (brands & styles vary - based on price, sound quality, disc size, etc).

So anyways, I went ahead and asked the champions, including my friend Valerie Garcia (future Mrs. John Romano), who soon will be a champion (just look at her -- but not for too long), what they listen to when their pumping iron and burning through hundreds of calories!

"It's crucial for me to have some beats in my ear while training, both weights and cardio. There have been times I've left the gym simply to drive back home if I've forgotten my ipod. Something in the music gets me going and keeps me focused. My music drowns out the horrible stuff they play in the gym, the obnoxiously loud girl yakking on her cell on the treadmill next to me, or the greasy guy trying to get my attention (thankfully, I train with my man now so I don't have to worry about that!). It is also a great way to discourage 'Chatty Cathys' from interrupting my workout.

I have my ipod filled with dance, electronic, and some hip-hop & rock. Top ten that never get old:

Reflekt ft. Delline Bass - 'Need to Feel Loved'
Ferry Corsten - 'Black Velvet'
Dinka - 'Elements' (EDX mix)
The Prodigy - 'Breathe'
Hibernate - 'Motion'
Kreayshawn - 'Online Fantasy'
Cerf, Mitiska, & Jaren - 'Beggin You' (Armin Van Buuren mix)
Rick Ross & Drake - 'Aston Martin Music'
Dave Aude & David Garcia - 'Dancin Circles'
The Movement - 'Livest Shit'"

Valerie Garcia

"I absolutely need to have my ipod when I am doing my lifting and night cardio (morning cardio I watch TV at my house). I typically lift with my husband, but we both listen to our music. I think music really helps me focus and it gives me the motivation to push myself. I definitely do not lift/ do cardio as hard when I am not listening to it or when someone is talking to me...the gym is not a place for socializing in my opinion. As far as what I listen to, I would say mostly rock with some hip hop thrown in depending on my mood. My top ten songs are:

Dig- Mudvayne
Warrior- Disturbed
Dragula- Rob Zombie
Show Me What You’ve Got- Powerman 5000
Booty Wurk- T-pain (leg day song) ;)
Numb- Rob Zombie
Shake My- Three 6 Mafia
Monster- Skillet
Tears Don’t Fall- Bullet for my Valentine
Fly- Nicki Minaj and Rihanna

"Be brave. Take risks. Nothing can substitute experience."

"Oh wow, what a great question. My song list is too long and varied to name them all. I mostly listen to the heavy stuff while I lift. It really gets the adrenalin goin! Sevendust, Disturbed, Pantera, Godsmack, Ozzy etc. I don't EVER have it off! I listen to it from the moment I step foot on the weight floor to the moment I get into my car. I am focused in the gym and it allows me to work hard and avoid any unnecessary jibber jabber with other people and avoid my muscles cooling off. It's a MUST have for my cardio. I couldn't make it through a session without it. Music is a BIG part of my life. My dad was a guitar player, my mom is a singer, my grandparents were singers, my son is a guitar player and drummer and my husband is a drummer. Needless to say music is in my blood. It's a MUST for me everyday!

My Top 10 songs would be as follows: (in no order)
Face to Face-Sevendust
Bitch-Sevendust
5 Minutes Alone- Pantera
Far Beyond Driven- Pantera
Cryin Like a Bitch-Godsmack
Walk-Pantera
Stupify-Disturbed
Awake-Godsmack
Stranglehold-Ted Nugent
Moonbaby-Godsmack
No Rest For The Wicked-Godsmack
Anything Sammy Hagar (he's my fav and I'll let anything play from him, even slow songs)

"Listening to music definitely can have an influence on my workout. Lately I've been doing cardio/lifting with my girlfriends Kelly and Lindsey, so I ditch the iPod when I'm with them. However, when I have to do cardio alone, my iPod is an absolute must. One will find a mix of Dance/Electronic remixes, Pop and Latin Pop on my iPod. I choose upbeat, positive music selections for my cardio sessions to keep me moving and feeling strong. I love to go dancing on the weekends with my friends, so I like the tunes that remind me of past fun weekends and weekends yet to come.

My cardio consists of walking so I walk to the beat of my music.

When I lift, I do listen to music, but it's not as necessary to me as having music during cardio.

My Top 10 Songs at the moment are:
1) Glad You Came-The Wanted, BassjackersRemix
2) Turn it Down-Kaskae
3) In the Air-Morgan Page
4) Llove-Kaskade
5) Eyes-Kaskade
6) Levels-Avicii
7) Stereo Love-Edward Maya
8) This is my Life-Edward Maya
9) She Wolf-Shakira
10) On the Floor-J Lo

All of these songs are awesome to me for their fun, catchy beats, and I have many good memories being out with friends having a total blast while listening to them. Number 10 on the list is significant because that is the song I walked out to on stage at my last show. It brings my mind to where it needs to be--thinking about hitting the stage next!

I've officially given up on trying to interview Detroit-based, Kyrstyn Niespolo, who was featured last year. It's very unforunate that in an industry full of people looking for good press, that someone would be so excited and grateful to be featured, only to then disappear all together. I was under a very strong impression that Kyrstyn would do an interview, so instead of interviewing others like IFBB Pro Bodybuilder Zoa Linsey (who I asked after Kyrstyn), I worked on questions for the person that was first in line.

Several messages since mid December, and I regretfully give up. I take FigureBikni.com very seriously -- and all the ladies that reply to my polls, get featured, and take the time to participate -- I owe you 100% of my all, because your name appears here. I have messaged this person, simply asking for a two word reply - and nothing. So anyways, THANK YOU to those of you that help this page. Like I always like to thell people -- you DON'T need a card -- to act like - or - be - A PROFESSIONAL. Some people can "go pro," but comport themselves like the biggest amateurs in the world!

On a sidenote, I want to stress how much I admire Team Bombshell, as well as other organizations like Tanji Johnson's Save Fitness. The vast majority of the athletes in these organizations, represent the most gifted, hard working, professional people in the entire industry. However, I do have to be fair, and I can only take so much rudeness - regardless who the athlete is "with." Peace!

It's Never to Late to Live Healthy!

Name- Sally Lunsford
Age- 25
Height- 5'7”
Contest Weight- 120 lbs
Regular Weight- 130 lbs
Hometown- Nine Mile Falls, WA

Growing up I was never very athletic. In fact, during my late teen/early 20’s I actually lived a pretty unhealthy lifestyle. It wasn’t until just a little over a year ago that I did the 180 and turned my lifestyle around. While living in Alaska I attended my first NPC show and knew that that was what I wanted to do. I began training immediately (with what little knowledge I had) and competed in my first show 6 weeks later where I placed 3rd. That got me motivated even more and from there I competed in the Emerald Cup in Washington State and the Alaska State Championships, at which I won my height class.

After this (May of 2011) I was kind of hitting a plateau with my physique since I didn’t have any formal guidance or training. This is when my life really changed and I began working with my current coaches, Shawn Clapp and IFBB Fitness Pro Cinzia Clapp, out of Eagle River, Alaska. From there I saw great changes in my physique and went on to compete at Team Universe in July 2011, the WA State Ironman in September 2011, and then NPC Nationals most recently in November 2011. Although I now live in Amarillo, TX I still train online with my coaches and compete with my team, the 907 Muscle Girls. I love competing and living a healthy lifestyle! Right now I am back in prep, so I am training hard and following a strict diet. I lift 5 days a week and do 1-2 cardio sessions 6 days a week.

My diet consists of 7 small meals a day mostly lean proteins (chicken, fish, egg whites, some steak) with moderate healthy fats (avocado, low-sugar peanut butter, egg) and low carbs (brown rice, vegetables, and oatmeal). My supplements include a multi, fish oils, CLA, Casein protein powder, and VPX N.O. Shotgun. My diet plan and workouts get changed up every so often by my trainers depending on how my body is responding.

I had a great first year competing and could not have done it without my coaches, Shawn and Cinzia, or my husband, Michael, who supports me 100% in my training. In 12 weeks I will be taking the stage again at the 2012 NPC Vancouver USA Natural & Tanji Johnson Fitness, Figure & Bikini Classic in Washington State. From there, my coaches and I will determine what’s next, but I do know that I will definitely be hitting the national-level stage again this year with my best physique yet! ;)

Editor's Notes

Big thanks to Sally Lunsford for taking the time to share her story, here, on FigureBikini.com. I think these kinds of accounts are extremely helpful for women that may not been active in their adolescence, but there's just something about the gym or the diet or the desire to compete, that flips a switch and changes lives. And while many people might not consider fitness to be equally empowering as a higher paying job, a degree, or more money, developing a physique you're proud of can be the biggest and most meaningful accomplishment listed so far. To know exude confidence in how you look, to be admired by your peers, to be sought after for advice -- who the heck wouldn't want to strive to achieve this level of adulation? Who wouldn't want to become a hero to someone that needs a little (or a lot of) inspiration?

What many of the women on this site have accomplished cannot be purchased, it can only be earned. Sally Lunsford made the big change, and thanks to a supportive network of friends and family, as well as top-knotch coaches and fellow competitors, she's already got her sights set on two shows in 2012. I'd like to wish her the best of luck in all her endeavours and I'd also like to thank her for candor and to commend her on a discipline that's not only changed her life phsyique-wise, but no doubt has had a profound impact on the person she is today!
